# Newsletter 12 - Stress
“If the problem can be solved why worry? If the problem cannot be solved worrying will do you no good.”
“si le problème peut être résolu, pourquoi s'inquiéter? Si le problème ne peut être résolu, s'inquiéter ne servira à rien.”
― Shantideva
If you've read my last 2 newsletters you might know by now that there is such a thing as a healthy amount of stress, called eustress, which can be beneficial as it motivates and energizes you to make positive changes.
Possible stressors that can be viewed as a source for “good stress” are
-
Life changes: Major life transitions such as starting a new job, being involved in a relationship, and parenting children can create eustress
-
Smaller challenges: The excitement of a roller-coaster ride, a scary movie, or a fun challenge
-
New experiences: Traveling can also create eustress. It can involve significant discomfort and unfamiliarity, but it also provides many discoveries and unforgettable memories.
-
New work projects: When you volunteer for a new project at work
-
Setting and working towards personal fitness goals whether it's to improve your overall health, look great in a swimsuit, feeling better about yourself
Take a moment to consider what activities or experiences bring YOU ahealthy amount of stress(eustress).
One way to determine if a source of stress is positive is to ask yourself whether it feels like a threat to your health or happiness at this current moment or if it feels like a challenge to overcome for the better?
If it feels like a threat, question that perspective, slowdown and think about it. Breathe, meditate, walk in nature, go out with friends, spend time with family, listen to music, watch a comedy (laugh), do yoga, run. In other words distance yourself from it for a moment and ask yourself again: is it really a threat or can something positive come out of it?
In Neurolanguage Coaching, you have at least 2 stressors that are definitely there to motivate you and push you.:
-
setting goals
-
being accountable
-
being reminded of why you seeked coaching in the first place
Before I go, I want to share with you an amazing insight from Kelly McGonigal TED Talk about stress:
“Chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort. And so I would say that's really the best way to make decisions, is go after what it is that creates meaning in your life and then trust yourself to handle the stress that follows.” Kelly McGonigal
