Newsletter 6 - Silence
“Silence is one of the great arts of conversation.” -
“Le silence est un des grands arts de la conversation.”
- Marcus Tullius Cicero (non vérifé)
We've written about how silence is important for the brain. Then we wrote about how important silence for language learning.
Today I want to share with you with the importance of silence during conversation.
In my coach training, one of the very first things we learned, was the importance of silence. In being silent we help our coachees by giving them the time and space to think, reason, reflect: listening is the most important skill we can develop, and to listen we must stay silent.
Being silent in our native languages is difficult, we often talk before we think. But in a 2nd or 3rd language things can be very different. In a 2nd language that you're not comfortable with or that you don't feel confident about:
-
you think before you talk
-
you only talk when you must
-
you don't interrupt people at the wrong moment
-
you focus on what other people are saying and you really listen
-
you appear calm and confident because you take your time
In other words, because you are not in your comfort zone, you do everything right. You do what the rest of us have to learn to do : to really listen, to pay attention, to be present during our conversation, to think before we talk.
So hold on to your silence, don’t be embarrassed by it, cultivate it, embrace it.
